Prepared Childbirth

Giving birth should be your greatest achievement, not your greatest fear. ~Jane Weideman

Pregnancy and birth are exciting times, full of physical and emotional joys and challenges. State College’s Childbirth Education Association (CEA) Prepared Childbirth class teachers recognize birth as a vital life event and respect each woman’s individuality and sense of autonomy. We believe that couples who are well informed and are prepared with skills and strategies will have the confidence to create a calmer and more satisfying birth experience. CEA’s mission is to give expectant parents the information needed to make informed decisions based on the knowledge of alternatives. Our small classes, taught by women with extensive training, allow you to actively participate in the learning process, have your questions answered in a supportive environment, develop friendships with other expectant parents, and gain the benefit of a support system both before and after your baby is born. This six-week series of classes should ideally be completed 4 to 6 weeks prior to the mother’s due date. Material is presented in a variety of methods including lecture, discussion, video, a take-home book, and practice of various comfort measures that are presented.

Instruction topics include:

  • Overview of the labor and birth process
  • Labor and birth positions and comfort measures
  • Relaxation exercises
  • Special breathing techniques
  • Massage during labor
  • Medication options
  • Mount Nittany hospital procedures
  • Birth plans
  • Unexpected challenges
  • Cesarean birth
  • Role of the support person
  • Postpartum recovery

Class Fee: $175 (payable by credit card or check)

Althought the Prepared Childbirth series offers more opportunities for review and practice, a more relaxed learning pace, and more time to spend with other expectant parents, we also offer an intensive weekend class for those with evening scheduling conflicts. These classes meet on Saturday and Sunday, and are a good alternative for those who are unable to schedule the six-week series.

Class Fee: $225 (payable by credit card or check)
